Dear Parent,

For many parents the decision as to whether to come to Tehran or not rests upon the question of what educational provision is available for their children. We hope this website will go someway in answering this question and giving you an insight into the British School, Tehran.

The school was founded in 2000, on the site of the British School that existed before the Iranian Revolution, thanks to the foresight of the British and Dutch Embassies who saw a need to provide educational facilities for a growing expatriate population. Although originally set up for the children of British and Dutch expatriates the school now attracts pupils from all sections of the expatriate community here in Tehran. At present the school caters to children between the ages of 4 and 11, in British terms between Reception and Year 6 - Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. A small nursery is also attached to the school.

Since its foundation the school has worked to maintain the highest educational standards and regularly submits itself to inspections by qualified OFSTED inspectors from the U.K., sections of the last inspection report can be found by following this link. The school being a member of ECIS/CIS is also committed to achieving accredited status as soon as possible.

Our curriculum is drawn from a variety of sources: the National Curriculum of England and Wales, the International Primary Curriculum and N.O.B. for our Dutch pupils. All the children sit the appropriate QCA SAT tests, both statutory and optional, and those set for Dutch children living overseas.

That's enough of the technical details, what is the school really like? We pride ourselves on the fact that the British School, Tehran is a very happy school in which children enjoy learning in a friendly and stimulating atmosphere. Our classes are limited in size giving teachers and children a real opportunity to get to know each other. The teaching staff is drawn from a wide variety of backgrounds with a great deal of overseas experience. Our pupils therefore benefit from exposure to a wide variety of teaching styles and teachers strive to draw the best out of each individual child. Children may join our classes but families join the school community, something that many find important here in Tehran.

Underlying all the above is one simple principle, 'seamless transferability'. It is fact of life that most postings to Tehran are only for two or three years and very few of our children will complete all their primary years of education at the British School, Tehran. It is therefore uppermost in our minds that children who stay with us for a relatively short period of time must be able to move easily onto to their next school with a minimum of disruption. The feedback we have received from children going on to a wide variety of education systems in different parts of the world has been very positive.

If I can be of any help to parents considering a move to Tehran please do not hesitate to contact me at school. Parents who are visiting Tehran prior to making a decision about bringing their families to Iran are most welcome to visit the school.

Hoping to welcome you to Tehran,
